What is Local-First AI? The Complete Guide
By Michael Folk, Founder of FolkTech AI.
Local-first AI is artificial intelligence that runs entirely on your device. No internet required. No cloud servers processing your data. No sending your conversations, photos, or documents to a company's data center thousands of miles away.
When you talk to a local-first AI, the conversation never leaves your laptop, phone, or home system. The AI lives on your hardware, thinks on your hardware, and stays on your hardware.
Why this matters now: almost every AI you use sends the question across the internet, waits on a data center, and ships an answer back. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot โ every conversation is processed on someone else's computer. That model made sense when only a warehouse of GPUs could run a model. The hardware on your desk can do it now. The business model has not caught up.
Speed is physics. Cloud AI has to travel. Typical cloud latency is 1,500 to 3,000 milliseconds. Local-first is 15 to 50 milliseconds. That is the difference between a conversation and a bad video call.
Privacy is architecture, not a policy. Cloud prompts are stored, trained on, readable by staff, breachable, and subpoenaable. Local-first never transmits. There is no server to raid.
Reliability: cloud AI needs your network, their servers, and everything in between. Local-first needs the device to be on. ChatGPT has gone dark for a day. A fall monitor that needs a region is not a tool.
Cost: cloud bills you per query because every query costs them money. Local-first costs the electricity already in the wall.
The work at FolkTech is proving this on consumer Macs at sub-20 milliseconds. Serena is the first product. Jake is next. The company exists so the next thing is built the same way.
